The Milton High School Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball 1st Annual Sports Raffle Supports Sports Excellence

We’re heading into the back-end of this year, but let’s rewind the clock back to January. Some of the first events of this year included Milton High School’s Girls and Boys Basketball 1st Annual Sports Raffle.

Milton High School has a rather illustrious sports history; two of the school’s alumni include Keith Yandle, defense for the Florida Panthers, and Rich Hill, pitcher for the Dodgers. The school’s sports teams are keeping up this path of sports excellence. The school’s Wildcats boys basketball team, for instance, has won State Championships three times—in 1988, 1996 and 2009.

Milton High School’s athletics program is also a part of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). The organization is, “a private, non-profit association organized by its member schools to govern, coordinate and promote education based programs for high school students.”

“In the education of 76% of the young people attending MIAA member schools, athletic participation is a critical component,” states the MIAA. “For many students, the most stable environment in their lives is that provided by high school activity programs.” The MIAA lauds its member schools for teaching its students “the values associated with discipline, performing under stress, teamwork, sacrifice, commitment, effort,…confidence, leadership and organizational skills,” and more.

In short, the Milton High School basketball teams, along with their other sports programs, provide a huge service for its students. This raffle allowed the school’s basketball teams to give its students the best experiences possible.

Winners were given some exceptional sports prizes, such as tickets to a Boston Celtics vs. Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game, a Boston Bruins vs. Detroit Red Wings hockey game, and a Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves baseball game.

On the whole, the raffle was a huge hit. Sean LoPresti, part of the Technology and Business Department of Milton High School, wrote that the raffle “raised over $7,000,” which was split between the girls’ and boys’ basketball programs. LoPresti also wrote about the ticket creation process, stating that the final look of the printed raffle tickets “definitely helped with the professional image of the fundraiser.”

LoPresti stated that the school “definitely on doing the same fundraiser next year,” so if you’re a part of the Milton community, make sure to look out for the raffle next year and help support local sports teams hoping to become champions.
