What is a Tricky Tray and How Does it Work?

A tricky tray raffle, also known as a penny social or basket raffle, combines a silent auction and raffle. To host a tricky tray, gather a great group of individual prizes (or basket prizes) with varying values. Arrange your prizes (like a tempting hotel breakfast buffet) and display ticket buckets, jars, baskets, or hats alongside each prize. As people walk into your tricky tray area, they'll immediately start eyeing prizes they want to win. The energy in the room will build and entice more people to participate!

You can sell your tickets at the door and in your tricky tray room. Or, if you're selling event tickets in advance, such as with a banquet or gala, you can bundle them into event ticket sales. Participants simply drop one of their tickets into its associated container to bid on any item. Once they run out of tickets, they can come and buy more auction tickets.
